Using Incredibox to teach 'The Elements of Music'
Lesson Idea 1: What is Beat?
Duration of Lesson: 60minutes
Learning intention: We are learning that beat is the first element that makes music, music.
Success Criteria: We are able to listen to the beat, clap and stomp along with it. We now know that the Beat is an element of music and that the underlying pulse of the music.
Student Back ground or knowledge: This lesson can be modified for early middle and senior primary grades. The students only need to be able to log and use an IPad or computer. For lower primary I would recommend iPads not computers for this lesson
Assessments ideas: Observations of prior knowledge, or as a final assessment on layering, or for early years composition.
Procedure
Introduction:

Students then brain storm with the teacher about What the beat is and what the beat is not on the interactive white board.

Teacher draws students attention to the learning intention that music has elements that they will be learning about 'Beat'.

The teacher shows the students her Incredibox composition and shows them the section for " Beat" ( which you can find if you click on the picture that are blue on your left)

The students then stand up and stomp on the beat to physically internalise that sensation.

The teacher and students then listen and watch as the teacher plays the ' Beat' Incredibox characters one at a time
-
Students clap or stomp to the underlying ' Beat'.

Students are then asked to come up and to help the teacher pick the best 'Beat'

The teacher asks students what the different colours might stand as they listen to each sound that they make when clicked on

Students help create a class Incredibox composition together.
Activity 1

Teacher guides students step by step as they log on to the Incredibox website and Select clip on V3.Students who are ICT savvy are free to move ahead at will the rest follow the teachers instructions.

Students select one character from each section and experience the sound they make. These characters can start and finish when selected they also can be muted and deleted for special effect.

Student go away in pairs and choose their 'Beat' and add parts to go with this Beat.
Activity 2

Teacher takes students through the steps on the interactive white board how to down load and share their Incredibox composition.Students then download their Incredibox by clicking the download button which saves it onto the student's hardrive for later access. Students can then share it on the school database or send it via email.
Activity 3

Students share their Incredibox with their partner

Students come together as a class to share their compositions

The best Incredibox are voited on by the class and then up loaded on to the teachers blog to be shared with the school community.
Conclusion

Students to Reflect by verbally sharing or writing down "what they have learned about the 'Beat', what it is and what it is not.
Hot tip: this lesson could also be used for story writing idea generator, maths for predictability, science for sound waves, and interpersonal development skills
